Engineering maintenance technician

The work

Engineering maintenance technicians service machinery and equipment in the manufacturing, production and transportation industries. You could be involved in a variety of jobs ranging from fixing equipment on a high technology production line, to testing aircraft parts and components in a hangar.

Depending on the type of business, you could be working on:

  • machinery used on production lines in factories
  • laboratory equipment in hospitals or pharmaceutical production units
  • motive power and ancillary installations used in the rail and road transport industries
  • civil or military aircraft
  • power generation equipment and facilities – hydro-electric, wind turbines, solar and marine energy technology, fossil fuel and nuclear power stations
  • automated baggage and people movers – lifts, escalators, walkways and airport skytrains.

Your work would fall into one of two types of maintenance – preventative (planned) and emergency.

In preventative maintenance your duties would include:

  • organising routine servicing schedules
  • allocating work to a team of fitters
  • checking and calibrating instruments to make sure they are accurate
  • fitting new parts as required, or as part of a regular replacement rota
  • carrying out quality inspections on jobs.

Emergency maintenance tasks would include:

  • responding immediately to equipment breakdowns
  • fixing faults on site or arranging for replacement equipment to be installed
  • keeping production managers informed of progress
  • organising teams or individuals to make sure that 24-hour cover is available.

You would follow manufacturer's technical manuals to help locate faults, using a range of testing instruments and tools.


Hours

You would normally work 37 to 40 hours week, which could involve shifts and emergency call-out duties.

You might work indoors in a factory or production plant or outdoors, servicing equipment on site. You would wear protective safety clothing such as overalls and safety boots for most jobs.


Income

  • Qualified technicians can earn between £18,000 and £22,000 a year.
  • Experienced technicians can earn £23,000 to over £30,000 a year.
  • Senior technicians can earn over £40,000 a year.

Entry requirements

You may be able to get into this career through an Apprenticeship scheme with an engineering, manufacturing or transport operating company. The range of Apprenticeships available in your area will depend on the local jobs market and the types of skills employers need from their workers. To get on to an apprenticeship scheme, you are likely to need GCSEs (grades A-C) in subjects like maths, science, English, and design and technology. Some employers might also ask for one or two A levels in maths and science, or equivalent qualifications.

Alternatively, you could take a college course which would teach you some of the skills needed. Relevant courses include:

  • BTEC Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Engineering (Operations and Maintenance)
  • City & Guilds Certificate or Diploma in Engineering
  • EAL Certificate or Diploma in Engineering.

Training and development

You could work towards a range of NVQ qualifications, depending on your job role. Examples include:

  • Engineering Maintenance and Installation Level 2
  • Process Engineering Maintenance levels 2 and 3
  • Engineering Maintenance Level 3
  • Maintaining Plant and Systems (Mechanical and Electrical) Level 3.

With a level three qualification, you could improve your career prospects by registering with the Engineering Council to gain EngTech status. See the Engineering Council website for more details.

Opportunities

Most jobs are with engineering, production and manufacturing companies. You may also have the chance to work abroad for multinational companies, particularly in EU countries, the USA, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

With further study up to degree level, you could eventually qualify as an engineer in your particular field, for example mechanical or electrical engineering.

You could also move into related areas, such as technical sales, maintenance team management and contract management.

Skills gaps in the region include: Materials Requirement Planning (MRP11); assembly line/production robotics; and welding skills. 27% of the workforce is employed as assemblers. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around Derby City, Leicester City, South Derbyshire, Charnwood, Hinckley and Bosworth and Ashfield.

East of England – There are an estimated 13,300 employees in the regional workforce, in around 380 companies. There is a total requirement of 3,880 employees needed in the region between 2007 and 2014. Skills gaps in the region include: Materials Requirement Planning (MRP11); CNC machine operation; and coach building. 27% of the workforce is employed as assemblers. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, South Cambridgeshire, Luton and Basildon.

London – There are an estimated 5,800 employees in the regional workforce, in around 160 companies. There is a total requirement of 1,130 employees needed in the region between 2007 and 2014. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around Barking and Dagenham, Hillingdon, Ealing and Hounslow.

North East – There are an estimated 12,100 employees in the regional workforce, in just over 100 companies. There is a total requirement of 2,560 employees needed in the region between 2007 and 2014. Skills gaps in the region include: Computer Aided Engineering (CAE); and welding skills. 49% of the workforce is employed as assemblers. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland and Sedgefield.

North West – There are an estimated 18,100 employees in the regional workforce, in just over 370 companies. There is a total requirement of 5,020 employees needed in the region between 2007 and 2014. Northern Ireland – There are an estimated 3,400 employees in the regional workforce. Skills gaps include: welding; CNC machine operations; mechanical engineering skills; metalworking; and electrical engineering skills.

Scotland – There are an estimated 3,600 employees in the regional workforce, in just over 110 companies. There is a total requirement of 260 employees needed between 2007 and 2014. Skills gaps include: tool setting; and manufacturing. 27% of the workforce is employed as vehicle body builders and repairers. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around the City of Glasgow, Fife, South Lanarkshire, the City of Aberdeen, North Lanarkshire and West Lothian.

Wales – There are an estimated 12,100 employees in the regional workforce, in just under 190 companies. There is a total requirement of 2,610 employees needed between 2007 and 2014. Skills gaps include: Computer Aided Design (CAD). 32% of the workforce is employed as assemblers. Engineering employment is geographically concentrated around Flintshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Rhondda, Cynon and Taff, Bridgend and Wrexham.
