Engineering craft machinist

The work

As an engineering craft machinist you would make parts for machinery, using tools like grinders, millers, cutters, lathes, drills and presses. You could produce engine components, parts for domestic appliances or medical equipment.

Your work would involve:

  • choosing and fitting the correct machine tool for the job
  • planning the different job stages following engineering instructions
  • setting the tolerance levels on the machine
  • working out the cutting speeds
  • placing a pre-formed 'blank' part in the jaws of the lathe, or on the bed of a mill or grinder
  • monitoring the job's progress
  • checking the quality of finished items.

Increasingly, you are likely to use computer-numerically-controlled (CNC) machines for jobs. This involves programming instructions into a panel to control the cutting process. See the CNC Machinist profile for more details about this role.


Hours

You would usually work 39 hours a week, Monday to Friday. You might work on a shift system to cover 24-hour production, and overtime may be available.

Your employer would normally provide you with overalls, protective boots, ear defenders and safety goggles.


Income

  • Starting salaries can be between £12,000 and £15,000 a year.
  • Experienced machinists can earn between £17,000 and £25,000.
  • Machinists with supervisory responsibilities can earn up to £30,000 a year.

Entry requirements

You could become a craft machinist after completing an engineering Apprenticeship. To get on to an Apprenticeship, you are likely to need four or five GCSEs (A-C), including maths, English and a science subject.

Alternatively, you could take a college course in engineering, which would teach you some of the skills needed. Relevant courses include:

  • BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Engineering
  • BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • City & Guilds Certificate in Engineering
  • EAL Certificate or Diploma in Engineering Technology.

Training and development

Once you start working, your induction training would normally include learning how to operate various machines, health and safety and company procedures.

Depending on your job role, you could work towards one of the following NVQ qualifications:

  • Performing Engineering Operations Level 2
  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering levels 2 and 3
  • Marine Engineering levels 2 and 3.

You could also take the Diploma in Engineering and Technology at Level 3, or Diploma in Engineering Inspection and Quality Control at Level 3.

Opportunities

Jobs tend to be in the mechanical engineering, automotive and aerospace industries, and shipbuilding. There may also be opportunities in maintenance work for industries that need to replace components regularly, for example in rail transport or power generation.

With experience, you could progress to supervisor of a production section or workshop. With further training, you may be able to move into engineering technician roles.
