Returning to work
Returning to work — questions and answers
I would like to return to my old job but I feel my knowledge and skills are out of date
There might be refresher courses that can update your skills and detail changes in your line of work. Or you could take a computer course to update your IT skills. Doing a management course could also help you to go back into your line of work in a higher position.
I'm anxious about going back to work
It's normal to feel anxious about making a change. The same applies to returning to work. Be positive and don't let a lack of confidence hold you back — you can build your confidence by challenging yourself and setting goals.
I want to do something different — what are my options?
It is common to want to do something different when you return to work. Talking to family and friends to get ideas for a new career is a good starting point. You can also explore your options by identifying your skills and matching them to different careers.
How can I present my time off in a positive light?
You will have learned valuable skills while bringing up children and running the home. Look at the skills you could use to your advantage.
Can I work flexibly to juggle childcare and work?
Many employers try to be flexible to take childcare into account — ask about their family-friendly policies. You could explore flexible working options such as part-time work, job-share, working from home and freelancing. Make sure you are claiming all the help you're entitled to, including schemes like Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit and free childcare for three- and four-year-olds.
