Vehicle faults that need checking before a driving test

Some vehicles need to be checked and possibly fixed before they can be used for a driving test because of vehicle manufacturer recalls. Find out if a safety or recall notice has been issued for your vehicle and what you need to do.

Driving your own vehicle at your practical driving test

Bring proof

If you don't bring proof:

  • your test will be cancelled
  • no expenses will be paid
  • you might lose your test fee

You can't use a recalled vehicle for your test unless you can show documents to prove to the examiner that:

  • the recall work has been carried out
  • the vehicle has been checked and no work is needed
  • the vehicle is free from needing the recall work

The proof that the vehicle has been fixed can be either of the following:

  • the actual recall letter or safety notice that has been stamped by the manufacturer or dealer
  • written proof from the manufacturer or a dealer (on official or headed notepaper)

If you don't give proof, your test will be cancelled, no expenses will be paid and you might lose your test fee.
