If you are good at maths, science and IT, and you want a career in engineering, this job could be ideal for you.

As an electrical engineer you would design, build and maintain electrical control systems, machinery and equipment.

In this job you will need to be able to find solutions to complex problems. You will have to be able to explain design ideas clearly to non-experts. You will also need to be able to make big decisions.

To get into this job you would normally need to complete a foundation degree, BTEC HNC, HND or degree in electrical or electronic engineering, engineering technology, or a related subject like building services engineering.



The work

As an electrical engineer, you could work in a range of areas, including:

  • transport networks, including rail electrification and signalling
  • power generation, transmission and distribution
  • renewable energy sources, such as solar panelling, hydroelectric and wind turbines
  • manufacturing and construction
  • building services, such as lighting, heating, ventilation and lift systems.

Your exact duties would depend on your industry, but could include:

  • carrying out feasibility studies for new technical developments
  • drawing up project plans, using computer-assisted engineering and design software
  • estimating costs and project timescales
  • coordinating the work of technicians and craftspeople
  • testing installations and systems, and analysing test data
  • making sure projects meet safety regulations
  • overseeing inspection and maintenance programmes
  • attending meetings, writing reports and giving presentations.

You would normally work on projects with other professionals, such as civil engineers, architects, engineering technicians and IT staff.


Hours

You would usually work around 40 hours a week. You may have to work occasional overtime in order to meet deadlines.

Depending on your job, you could be based in an office, factory, production plant, workshop, power station or research facility.


Income

  • Graduate engineers can earn between £20,000 and £25,000 a year
  • Experienced incorporated engineers can earn between £28,000 and £38,000
  • Chartered electrical engineers can earn between £40,000 and £50,000 a year.

Entry requirements

You would normally need to complete a foundation degree, BTEC HNC, HND or degree in electrical or electronic engineering, or engineering technology. Other subjects that cover the electrical knowledge and skills you would need for this career include:

  • building services engineering
  • mechanical engineering
  • applied physics
  • aeronautical engineering
  • mechatronics.

With a degree in a relevant subject, you may be able to join a company's Graduate Apprenticeship scheme.

You may also be able to get into this career starting off as an electrical technician apprentice with an engineering or electrical company and then continuing on after your Apprenticeship to higher education qualifications.

Training and development

It is important that you continue to develop your skills and knowledge throughout your career, through continuing professional development (CPD).

You could improve your career prospects by working towards incorporated or chartered status. To do this, you should register with your relevant professional body and apply to the Engineering Council. You can find out more on the Engineering Council website.

As an incorporated engineer, you would specialise in the day-to-day management of engineering operations. At chartered level, you would have a more strategic role, planning, researching and developing new ideas, and streamlining management methods.

To be an electrical engineer you will need to have:

  • the ability to produce and interpret accurate drawings
  • the ability to analyse complex problems and assess possible solutions
  • the ability to explain design ideas clearly
  • strong decision-making skills

  • good organisational skills
  • the ability to manage a budget
  • excellent teamworking and people skills
  • a good understanding of electrical health and safety regulations
  • normal colour vision.

The electronics and electrical equipment manufacturing industry is part of the engineering manufacturing, science and mathematics sector, represented by Semta Sector Skills Council. The UK electronics and electrical equipment manufacturing industry covers:

  • Electronics: one of the principal branches of electrical engineering and electronics companies include those that are involved in the business of creating, designing, producing and selling electronic systems, components and equipment (such as semi‐conductors), communications technology, consumer electronics, computers and other IT equipment. The UK electronics industry is worth approximately £23 billion a year and is now the fifth largest in the world in terms of production.
  • Electrical equipment manufacture: companies are involved in the manufacture, design and development of electrical equipment. This includes: electric motors, generators and transformers; electricity distribution and control apparatus, insulated wire and cable; office machinery; photocopiers, cash registers and computer equipment; and television and radio receivers, sound or video recording equipment.

East of England – There are an estimated 26,300 people employed in just over 1,430 electronics companies and 10,100 people in just under 710 electrical equipment manufacture companies in the region. There is a total requirement of 11,220 employees needed in the region between 2007 and 2014.
