Types of learning
Improving your skills
Learning new skills is a great way to improve your chances of getting a job, or getting more from the job you already do. A new qualification can also help you to feel good about yourself, and get more out of life in general.
Choose how you learn
When you are thinking about improving your skills, remember that you can also choose when and how you learn.
If you are thinking about doing a course, check what's available in a college or training centre near you. There are thousands of courses to choose from in the UK, full time or part time. Ask at work to see if they will support you in getting new skills, or if they are providing training you can do. You may also be eligible for help with funding for courses.
Boost your basic skills
Don't let your basic skills hold you back. It's easy to get help with reading, writing and maths at a time and place to suit you. If you need help with English language, or your computer skills need updating, find a course at the right level for you. Learning these skills is a great way to improve your confidence and get you ready for your next career move.
Higher education
Getting a higher education qualification can open up new career options, broaden your experience and give you the opportunity to meet new people.
There are lots of different courses, apart from degrees, such as Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). A foundation degree can be a mix of study and workplace learning. You can learn at university or at your local college, studying full or part-time. You can get more information about moving on to Higher Education from the Life Pilot website.
There’s a range of grants, loans and bursaries to help you pay for higher education. If you get help through a grant or bursary, you don't have to pay it back.
