This course is particularly suitable for those students who wish to progress to a career in childcare. Successful students will gain Level 3 Qualified Practitioner status and may seek work within early years, childcare services, residential care or special needs. This course can also lead to further study in teacher training, childhood studies, nurse training and subject specialist degrees. The course is based on continuous assessment and students are required to work through assignments graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction across a range of subjects. There is a mandatory minimum of 800 hours work experience/professional practice within the course and tutorial guidance and support and key skills are also included. The course units cover areas such as:Children£s£ Learning Activities and PlaySafeguarding Children and Protecting Children£s RightsSupporting Literacy and NumeracyPromoting Wellbeing and Resilience Many of our students go on to work in Early Years environments such as nurseries and childcare facilities. Some go on to further study at University and teacher training. Others decide to stay with us and continue with the HND Advanced Practice in Working with Children and Families, and then go into teaching etc. The units studied give students a broad understanding of the nature of childcare and education. Some are more practical in nature including Positive Environments which includes bathing and changing babies; and others are more theoretical such as Psychological Perspectives on children£s behaviour. Work experience Professional Practice is a key part of our programme, and students will be required to attend 4 different placements whilst on the course. These placements are found for you by our Work Experience Team but you will have a stay in the choice of placement as long as they meet the age ranges we need you to cover. This includes the use of observations and how they can be used to promote development. Information is given on communicating with babies and young children. Learners will be taught how to prepare feeds for babies and how to meet nutritional requirements of children under three. Routine care needs will be taught, along with signs and symptoms of illness. This is a vocational qualification where learners will gain knowledge and skills from both college and work placement. Teaching of units will take place in college, however learners will be expected to demonstrate competency of their new knowledge and skills within work placement. This one year course is designed to enable students to achieve a relevant level 3 childcare qualification, in line with current Government legislation, to enable them to work directly with children in childcare settings. The course gives the students the opportunity to explore and become proficient in a wide range of childcare skills.
