What you need to know

Government Gateway

While applying, you’ll be issued with a Government Gateway user ID. If you already have a Government Gateway user ID, simply enter it with your password.

Important

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) wants to work with you to ensure that your identity and personal data are protected and will carry out identity checks for your security and protection.

By applying online you will be giving DVLA consent to check your personal data, including your National Insurance number. DVLA will confirm your details with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). If DVLA can't fully verify and authenticate your identity, you will be told what to do next at the end of the application.

If you have a paper licence

You will need to provide a photo and signature for your new licence. If you have a UK passport DVLA will try to electronically capture these from the Identity and Passport Service.

If this isn’t possible, or you don’t want DVLA to use the photo on your passport, you will need to send a photo by post. At the end of your online application DVLA will post your application completion form to you for you to return with your photo.

If you have a photocard licence

If the photo on your licence is due to expire and you want or need to renew the photo, you must provide your UK passport number and the passport must have been issued within the last five years. DVLA will try to electronically capture your photo and signature from IPS. If this isn’t possible, or you don’t want DVLA to use the photo on your passport, you cannot renew the photo on your licence online. Please use the ‘renewing the photo on your driving licence’ link on the right hand side, showing other ways to renew the photo on your licence.
