Change of name and address on your registration certificate

You must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) immediately of any changes to your name, address or both. Return your registration certificate (V5C) to DVLA for amendment. A new one will be issued free of charge. Telling DVLA ensures your V11 renewal reminder is sent to your correct address.

Change of address only

Complete your new address details on section six of your registration certificate:

  • enter your address – Post Office box addresses can only be used for companies and corporate bodies
  • sign and date the ‘declaration’ box in section eight
  • send the whole registration certificate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA

Note: If your vehicle needs taxing within the next four weeks please take the registration certificate to the Post Office® to tax and fill in section six.

Change of name only

Complete your new name on section six of your registration certificate:

  • enter your title and name - you can't register joint names eg husband and wife
  • enter your date of birth – optional (not needed if registered to a business)
  • fleet number - for use by fleet operators only
  • sign and date the ‘declaration’ box in section eight
  • send the whole registration certificate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA

Change of name and address

Complete all the details in section six on the registration certificate as advised above.

If you've lost your registration certificate, you can still notify changes by applying for a replacement certificate.

When to expect your new registration certificate

DVLA aims to deliver a registration certificate to you within four weeks of receiving your application. Allow at least six weeks for your registration certificate to arrive before contacting DVLA.

Updating other documents

Remember that you may need to change your name and address details on your driving licence.

If you’ve got a personalised registration retention document, you’ll need to return it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BW. A new one will be delivered to you within six weeks. If you fail to update it, you may not get a reminder to extend the retention period and your entitlement to the registration number could be lost.
