Case studies of people awarded honours

Watch some short videos or read about the experiences of people who have been awarded honours to recognise their exceptional achievement or service.

Jean Bartlett, MBE

Jean Bartlett was awarded an MBE for services to the Aylesbury Estate, London Borough of Southwark, in the New Year Honours List 2011.

She has been a resident of the Aylesbury Estate for over 40 years and has been extremely active on behalf of the estate's community. She set up Tykes Corner, a parent and toddler centre, in 1998 in response to a lack of facilities in the area. The centre has expanded and is now a community hub for children, parents, grandparents and carers to meet and socialise while their children play and learn.

Woon Wing Yip, OBE

Woon Wing Yip was awarded an OBE for services to the oriental food industry in the New Year Honours List 2010.

He is chairman and founder of Wing Yip plc, a family-owned group of companies based in Birmingham which employs some 300 people. His stores have won various business awards over the years. He is also a generous benefactor of charities and community projects, with a particular interest in supporting higher education.

John Carpenter, MBE

John Carpenter was awarded an MBE for services to disabled people in Berkshire, Cornwall and nationally, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2007.

He has used his knowledge and skills as an engineer to design and build devices for disabled people which are not available on the commercial market. He does this work through Remap, a network of volunteer craftsmen and engineers working to help disabled people go about their lives.

Clasford Stirling, MBE

Clasford Stirling was awarded an MBE for services to sport in North London, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2007.

He is the Youth and Sports Development Officer at Broadwater Farm estate. He runs Broadwater United football club where he works with hundreds of young people every week. Several of these young people have gone on to Premier League football teams.

Ylana First, MBE

Ylana First was awarded an MBE for services to the community in Tynemouth and to the Arts in North Tyneside, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2007.

She worked to save Tynemouth Station from ruin, and to transform it into a community and arts venue. The station building hosts markets at weekends and exhibits art in 'The Bridge'.

George Loble, MBE

George Loble was awarded an MBE for services to the Women's Cancer Detection Society in Gateshead and to the community in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2007.

He is Chair of the Women's Cancer Detection Society and has worked tirelessly to raise funds for equipment and research.
