Text version

John Carpenter, MBE

My name is John Carpenter, and I live in Falmouth in Cornwall. I was awarded the MBE for, I suppose, 25 years of service to the disabled in the organisation known as Remap, which makes, designs and builds devices for disabled people which are not on the commercial market.

We have over 100 branches throughout the country, even including four in Northern Ireland now. The Remap panels consist of occupational therapists and other medical professionals perhaps, and mainly engineers, who do the work.

Tony Barber

I'm Tony Barber, I'm a member of the Cornwall Panel of Remap. We meet about every two months, and what happens at our meetings is that we look at the cases that have been brought forward, we allocate engineers to look at each project, and we discuss the cases that have already been dealt with to see whether there's any follow-up needed.

John was a member of National Remap since it first started in 1983 as I remember. He retired and moved down here to be near his son, and because he's so much of an enthusiast he immediately joined the Cornwall Panel, and he's been of great assistance to us for the last few years.

John Carpenter, MBE

My friends and family were all delighted at the news and said that the long period that I'd been involved in work for the disabled really merited it.

Tony Barber

Oh, well, very well deserved, yes. John was instrumental in starting Remap in the early days, he was a trustee for many years, and now he's Vice-President of National Remap.

A well-earned honour and I'm sure John would say it reflects not only on him but on the work that Remap itself does in helping disabled people go about their lives.
