Edexcel NVQs in Health and Social Care have been developed in line with the National Occupational Standards for Health and Social Care developed by Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health. They represent the changes that have occurred in social care practice and form the basis of regulation of the workforce.
The NVQ at Level 2 is the required qualification for 50% of the workforce in regulated care services. It is considered to be the minimum qualification required by a care worker. The NVQ will be appropriate for those working in private care homes and homes run within the public health system.
The NVQ at Level 3 will enable candidates to develop more specialist competencies for use in the Health and Social Care Sector. There are two pathways – one for those whose work role is predominantly with Adults and another for those whose work role is predominantly with Children and Young People.
The NVQ at Level 4 also has two pathways, as described for Level 3, which offer the opportunity for development of specialist and managerial skills in the workplace. It is a requirement of the Care Standards Act 2000 that each registered care service has a registered manager who is responsible for the service.
