Textile and surface design impacts on many aspects of our lives, from what we wear to how we decorate and furnish our homes. From dresses to cushions, gift wrap to ceramics, buildings to book covers, the potential of design within this area is extensive. If you are inspired by pattern, texture and colour and have an interest in design, this course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to begin a career in textiles. The course covers a broad range of textile techniques and is assignment based. It involves the development of woven, embroidered textiles and a variety of printed and dyed fabrics. Other surface pattern processes such as felt and fabric manipulation are also covered, and the potential of these fabrics for interiors - soft furnishings, wallpaper - and fashion is investigated. Students will also have the opportunity to explore drawing techniques. A programme of historical studies, professional studies and computer-aided design will complement practical textile design.
