Video: applying for your provisional driving licence
Find out how to apply for your provisional driving licence with the DVLA
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) wants to work with you to ensure that your identity and personal data are protected and will carry out identity checks for your security and protection.
By applying online you will be giving DVLA consent to check personal data, including your National Insurance number. DVLA will confirm your details with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). If DVLA can't fully verify and authenticate your identity, you will be told what to do next at the end of the application.
The photo for your licence
You will need to provide a photo and signature for your new licence. If you have a UK passport DVLA will try to electronically capture these from the Identity and Passport Service.
If this isn’t possible, or you don’t want DVLA to use the photo on your passport, you will need to send a photo by post. At the end of your online application DVLA will post your application completion form to you for you to return with your photo.
