Telling DVLA about a bereavement

If you have recently had a bereavement, you should notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) as soon as possible. Sending the driving licence and registration certificate (V5C) to DVLA stops you from getting any mail about the deceased at a later date.

Send the driving licence to DVLA

Send the driving licence with a covering letter, explaining your relationship to the deceased, to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB.

You can also return the driving licence with the registration certificate, in the same envelope, to the addresses mentioned below.

How to tell DVLA if you decide to keep the vehicle

If you have the registration certificate you’ll need to:

  • fill in section six ‘new keeper details’
  • sign and date the ‘new keeper declaration’
  • tear off and keep the green V5C/2 ‘new keeper’s supplement’

Send the registration certificate with a covering letter, explaining your relationship to the deceased, to the Sensitive Casework team (SC) Team, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZZ. You should receive a new registration document within four weeks of DVLA getting your letter.

If you haven’t got the registration certificate you still need to send your letter to the above address. You’ll then need to fill in an ‘Application for a vehicle registration certificate’ form V62 and send this to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD.

You can download the form V62 or get one from any Post Office® branch or a DVLA local office.

If the vehicle hasn't got a current tax disc, you'll need to tax it or remove the vehicle from the road and make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

How to tell DVLA you’re selling the vehicle

How you tell DVLA you have sold the vehicle will depend on if you have the registration certificate and who you sold it to.

Selling the vehicle with a registration certificate

You’ll need to:

  • fill in section six ‘new keeper details’
  • ask the buyer to sign and date the ‘new keeper declaration’
  • tear off and give the green V5C/2 ‘new keeper’s supplement’ to the buyer

Send the registration certificate with a letter to the Sensitive Casework team (SC) Team, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZZ. The new keeper should receive a new registration document within four weeks of DVLA getting your letter.

Selling the vehicle with a registration certificate to a motor trader

You’ll need to:

  • fill in section nine ‘sale/transfer to the motor trade’
  • get the motor trader to sign and date the same section
  • tear off this slip to return to DVLA
  • give the rest of the registration document to the motor trader

Send the slip with a letter to the Sensitive Casework team (SC) Team, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZZ.

Selling the vehicle without a registration certificate

If you’re selling the vehicle and the buyer agrees to buy it without a registration certificate, they will need to fill in form V62 and send it to DVLA. You will then need to write a letter and include the date you sold the vehicle and the buyers name and address. Send the letter to the Sensitive Casework team (SC) Team, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZZ.
