If you have recently had a bereavement, you should notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) as soon as possible. Sending the driving licence and registration certificate (V5C) to DVLA stops you from getting any mail about the deceased at a later date.
Send the driving licence with a covering letter, explaining your relationship to the deceased, to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB.
You can also return the driving licence with the registration certificate, in the same envelope, to the addresses mentioned below.
If you have the registration certificate you’ll need to:
Send the registration certificate with a covering letter, explaining your relationship to the deceased, to the Sensitive Casework team (SC) Team, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZZ. You should receive a new registration document within four weeks of DVLA getting your letter.
If you haven’t got the registration certificate you still need to send your letter to the above address. You’ll then need to fill in an ‘Application for a vehicle registration certificate’ form V62 and send this to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD.
You can download the form V62 or get one from any Post Office® branch or a DVLA local office.
If the vehicle hasn't got a current tax disc, you'll need to tax it or remove the vehicle from the road and make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).
How you tell DVLA you have sold the vehicle will depend on if you have the registration certificate and who you sold it to.
