Getting involved in the performing arts

The performing arts cover a wide range of things including dance, mime, theatre and music. There are many ways to get involved, including workshops, classes and joining a performance company.

Performing arts and disability

Throughout the UK, there are many organisations and charities that work with disabled people, often run by professional artists and performers. Some are run by non-disabled people, others by disabled people, and often by a combination of the two.

Performance organisations often work closely in education, visiting schools and running after-school and holiday clubs as well as touring across the UK.

They are committed to promoting a positive view of disability and challenging preconceptions. Most of all, they provide an opportunity for people to realise their personal potential.

Getting involved

Most performing arts organisations are run locally. They may organise regular performances, workshops and training programmes for people of all abilities and from different backgrounds. Participants may be involved in the creation, production and direction of performances.

Some organisations specialise in involving people with specific impairments.
