How to buy a DVLA registration

DVLA Personalised Registrations offers a range of ‘new’ unissued registration numbers for you to buy online or at auction. Whether you want a personalised registration for yourself or as a gift for someone else, searching for what’s available and buying online is quick and easy.

Which one would you choose?

You can search online to see what personalised registrations are available and how much they cost.

Prices start from £250, and include VAT and the ‘assignment fee’ – the fee DVLA charges to put the registration number on the vehicle.

When you’re ready, you can buy online 24 hours a day.

Registration number auctions

DVLA Personalised Registrations also auctions some registration numbers. DVLA holds about six auctions a year, each selling about 1,500 registration numbers. Full details of each auction are advertised in the press or online.

Bidding in person is the most popular and exciting way to buy a personalised registration. If you can't make it to the auction, you can bid by phone, in writing or online.

What you get for your money

You only buy the right to have a particular registration number assigned (put on) to and displayed on a vehicle registered in your name, or in the name of another person (the nominee). All registration numbers are owned by the Secretary of State.

Registration numbers bought from DVLA Personalised Registrations can only be used on a vehicle registered (or about to be registered), taxed and used in Great Britain.

You’ll get a certificate of entitlement (V750), which includes details of:

  • the registration number
  • the purchaser and nominee
  • the date when the right to assign the registration number will end

You can extend the right for a further one, two or three years. The fee to extend is £25 for one year, £50 for two years or £75 for three years.

The nominee has no right to the registration number until it's assigned to their vehicle. You can add a nominee (if you don’t have one) or change the nominee at any time, or at the same time as the registration number is assigned.

After the personalised registration has been assigned

The rights to transfer or retain the registration number pass to the registered keeper of the vehicle displaying the registration number.
