Reporting a death

You can use this service to help you tell government and the local councils about the death and you won’t have to send a copy of the death certificate in the post.

This service is not a claim for benefit, but it can help you give the information to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If you want the information can be passed onto a number of other government departments and local council services.

You may have already read a leaflet from your local council about this service. If not please ask for one or you can learn more about this service on the Cross & Stitch website.

Please note an asterisk '*' means this information must be provided.

Information Required

To use this service you will need the Tell Us Once service reference number, the deceased's national insurance number, driving licence number and passport number.

You will be asked about the next of kin (closest relative by blood or marriage) and the person dealing with the estate (the person sorting out their property, belongings and money). You will need their:

Name, address and telephone number.
Permission to provide their details.

These people may be contacted by the organisations we inform.
