Public protest and trade disputes

Workers' rights and freedom of speech are supported in the UK. Procedures for trade disputes and industrial action mean the people involved are protected. The safety and security of workers during protests keeps potentially volatile situations under control.

Guidance on industrial action, picketing and strikes

Guidance on industrial action that takes place after a trade dispute is in place so that unions and workers are protected while standing up for their rights.

Promoting safety and security during protests

The Metropolitan Police Service has produced guidance to assist staff and management to review their current security arrangements. It provides advice on physical security and personal safety. Situations and circumstances can vary and this material should not be considered as a definitive guide. The advice and recommendations will need to be adapted to suit different situations.

The National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit (NETCU) is a national policing unit that promotes a coordinated response to domestic extremism. It provides:

  • tactical advice to the police service
  • information and guidance to industry and government
