How do I reorder the job list?

When you first perform a job search, any vacancies returned will be listed in 'Best match' order.  This means that the list will be ordered according to how best the jobs match your search criteria.

There are other ways of ordering your job list as described below.  If you want to reorder the job list, select one of the results list column headings: your results will then be redisplayed according to the chosen order. The results of any further job searches will be ordered in the same way.  Note: reordering the job list does not start a new search or insert more vacancies; it simply reorders the list according to your selection.

You can also change the number of jobs shown in your results list.  To do this select one of the 'Results per page' options.  Any further job searches will continue to show your selected number of jobs per page.

Best match
This is the default order in which jobs are returned.  'Best match' means that the list will be ordered according to how best the jobs match your search criteria with the closest matches at the top of the list.  Any jobs which have a yellow 'Best match' star next to them should match your search criteria exactly. The 'Best match' star is only shown when you have carried out a search using the detailed criteria such as Hours, Perm/temp etc.  As you move down the list, you'll see jobs which are less relevant but still may be of some interest to you.  Job lists are ordered with local jobs displayed first, followed by regional and national jobs (such as homeworking jobs or jobs involving travel).  As a result, you may see some regional or national jobs with the 'Best match' star listed below local jobs without the star.  You should note that if you carry out a very basic search, for example 'All jobs' in a location, they will be listed in alphabetical order.

Job title
This option orders the results in alphabetical order by the Job Title.

Wage
If the list is reordered by 'Wage' the results will be shown with the highest annual wage presented at the top of the list and the lowest at the bottom.  As various wage periods are used for different jobs (e.g. hourly, daily, weekly, annual and others) Jobs & Skills will calculate an annual full time equivalent (FTE) wage based on the information shown in the 'Wages' column and present the reordered list accordingly.  The reordering is based only on the wage information available and does not take into account the number of working hours per week for any job listed.  You should note that the reordering can only apply to jobs with a numeric value in the 'Wages' column.  Any jobs which do not have numeric information in the 'Wages' column e.g. 'Competitive salary', 'National minimum wage' etc., will be shown at the bottom of the job list.

Distance from postcode
This option reorders the list based on how near the jobs are to the postcode used for the search.  Those jobs nearest to the postcode are shown at the top of the list.  Jobs & Skills always bases its job searches on postcodes.  So, if you have performed a search using a location name, the system will convert the location to a postcode and use it to search.  For example, if you have searched using 'Liverpool' the system will actually carry out a search based on a central Liverpool postcode, in this case L3 5RL.  If you have searched using a location name, you can always find out the actual postcode used for the search by looking at the top of the job list (e.g. 'This search is for postcode L3 5RL with a radius of 15 miles').

Date posted
This option reorders the results by the date that the job was added to the Jobcentre Plus database.  The most recently added jobs are shown at the top of the list.

Results per page
You can also select how many results you would like to see on each page of the job list.  Your first search will always return 20 jobs on each page, as long as there are a minimum of 20 jobs based on your search criteria.  If you want to show a different number of jobs per page, select your preference from the 'Results per page' drop down menu and then 'Reorder'.  The job list will be redisplayed with the chosen number of results per page.
