How do I search for jobs?

The easiest way of searching for a job is to type what you are looking for and where in the relevant boxes.  If you want to see all jobs in your area, type in 'all jobs' and a location or postcode for your search.  For a more specific search, you can also select from the following options:

· Hours
· Perm/Temp
· Age of vacancy
· Working pattern

Can I search for part time work?
To look for part time work, type what you are looking for and where in the relevant boxes and also specify the hours that you are looking for in the 'Hours' box before searching.

Can I search using the job reference number?
Yes, just type the job reference number in the 'Job title, job ref or SOC code' box.  The job reference number is in the format ABC/12345 and is not case sensitive.

Can I search using SOC codes?
Yes, you can type up to 3 SOC codes in the 'Job title, job ref or SOC code' box.  If you are claiming Jobseekers Allowance, you will find SOC codes relating to the type of work you are looking for on your Jobseekers Agreement (JSAg).

What else can I type in the 'Job title, job ref or SOC code' box?
In addition to a job reference number, SOC codes and part time work, you can also input;

1  Up to three types of work you are seeking or,
2  The phrase 'all jobs' or
3  The phrase 'all today's jobs'.

Location Box
In the 'Location' box you can enter a location name or postcode e.g. 'Stafford' or 'S1 4ER' or 'DE4'.  Or, if you want to look for work nationwide, you can enter words like 'Great Britain' or 'GB'.

Distance
You can use the 'Distance' drop down menu to set the size of the area for your job search.  The default option is 15 miles, which means that searches will return vacancies within a 15 mile radius from your specified location.  You can narrow or widen your search area by selecting different distance options.  Please note that for an 'all jobs' search, the distance will be limited to a maximum of 15 miles.

 

How do I find home working vacancies?

If a job is not location specific - for example, a home working job or a job requiring travel - then employers will normally assign a regional or national indicator to the vacancy.  Normally search results are ordered to show local vacancies first, followed by jobs which are classed as regional or national. Sometimes you might not see any regional or national jobs at all, especially if a large number of local vacancies have been returned. Therefore, the easiest way to find home working jobs is to carry out your search using a very small radius (e.g. 1 mile). This will mean that a small number of local vacancies will be returned and you should see some regional or national jobs (if there are any available).

For example, if you run a search for sales in Sheffield with a radius of 1 mile, you will see a range of regional and national vacancies.

Please note that not all jobs that include a regional or national indicator are home based jobs.
