Update - December 2011

The independent Riots Communities and Victims Panel has now published its interim report. It finds that there were many causes and motivations for the disorder in England between 6-10 August 2011.

Listening to the communities affected

The panel will talk directly to those who were affected in their communities including young people, local businesses, parents and residents.

The work of the panel will be to look at:

• the motivation for a small minority of people to take part in riots
• why the riots happened in some areas and not others
• how key public services engaged with communities before, during and after the riots
• what motivated local people to come together to take civic action to resist riots in their area or to clean up after riots had taken place
• how communities can be made more socially and economically resilient in the future, in order to prevent future problems
• what they think could have been done differently to prevent or manage the riots

The panel will publish an interim report in November and will present a final report to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Official Opposition in March 2012.

Contacting the panel

The panel will travel around the country to speak directly to people about the causes of the riots and to gather evidence. They will hold one-to-one meetings, open public meetings, and meetings with representative groups to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.

The visit schedule will be regularly updated to please keep checking to see when the panel will be in your area.
