Annual leave and holidays

All the information you need to know about your right to paid annual leave, how to calculate your holiday entitlement according to your working pattern, accruing your leave and carrying it over, and taking your holiday.

Holiday entitlement: your rights

All workers have a right to a minimum of 5.6 weeks paid annual leave, but your employer may offer more. Find out the basics of working out your holiday entitlement, including your rights on bank holidays.

Calculating holiday entitlement

Your holiday entitlement will depend on your employer, but the exact number of days can also be dependent on your working hours or working pattern. Work out what your holiday allowance is.

Building up and carrying over holiday entitlement

Employers may run an 'accrual system' for holiday entitlement. Otherwise they will have a leave or holiday year which sets out the period in which you should take your leave. Find out more about how these schemes work.

Taking your holiday

Once you have calculated your holiday entitlement you will need to make sure you give your employer the right notice. Some contracts may set out when some of your holiday should be taken. Your employer should make sure they pay you correctly for your holiday.
